Going the Distance

The past few days have felt much cooler for the month of August which can only mean one thing; fall is near! And you know what that means; running season is upon us!

Exercising and eating healthy is a big focus of many Oak Crest residents and with the new fitness center scheduled to open in November, I can only imagine what is to come! Over the next few weeks Channel 973 will be airing some shows focusing on summer fitness and healthy eating so make sure to check the TV Guide for the listings.

As for me, this summer I feel like all I have been doing is sleeping, eating, and running. And I’m sure Catherine, Jeff, and Bob can say the same. When it comes to training for a race, your whole mindset changes and your schedule is dedicated to long runs, hill repeats, and speed workouts. You are tired 24/7 and you are hungry all.the.time.

This summer, I decided to join the Charm City Marathon training group to get in shape and cut down my time for my fall race. It’s really nice being able to run with others who share the same passion and get the time commitment aspect. It’s even better because on days when I feel lazy, that group holds me accountable. So I lace up my shoes and head out the door.

Last year, I sat down with Jeff Getek and Bob Gralley to talk about the Baltimore Running Festival. To this day, it might be one of my favorite stories. Bob started running at the age of 45; marathons, half marathons, 5ks…he did it all. A few years ago, Bob and Jeff got to talking and Jeff said when he turns 45, if Bob is still running, he will run a half marathon with him.

Now, we all know Oak Crest is comprised of very special people…so of course, the “marathon man” was still running races at the age of 90, which meant Jeff had to live up to his promise and run a half marathon. An incredible experience for everyone, that will be repeated again this October!

For our show this year, we’re adding a veteran into our group; the one and only Catherine Cohen. From marathons, to 50ks to 100 mile races, to winning a 72 hour race, (yes, you read that correctly) SEVENTY TWO HOURS OF RUNNING, she is definitely a book of knowledge when to comes to running. No matter what advice I need, she always has a detailed answer of what to do.

During the interview, we talk about healthy eating tips, how to stay on top of getting enough sleep, and training smart. We also talk about the races we’re running this fall and how our training process is going.
