The week of June 26th was Brain Week here at Oak Crest and what a week it was! From learning about healthy eating to how to properly exercise, many residents took away information to prolong their life.
A familiar face during this week was one of the Oak Crest nutritionists, Adriane Kozlovsky, who also teaches yoga to the staff members. Some of the key points she focused on during this week dealt with nutrition and health eating; especially when it comes to Signature Dining.
She spoke about making healthy choices at dinner and filling your diet with a sufficient amount of antioxidants. What are antioxidants, you ask? They are mainly found in fresh fruits and vegetables that prevent the oxidation of other molecules in the body. These include blueberries, cranberries, avocados, pecans, raisins, plums, oranges…and many, many more.
She also talked about how it’s important to include those Omega 3s, or the good fats, in your diet as well such as salmon. In our memory fitness class a few residents talked about how they are not the biggest fish fans; and that’s ok! You can take fish supplements which is great to lower your elevated triglyceride levels and keep your risk for heart disease down. Fish oils can also help lessen joint pain (did someone say arthritis??)
The rest of the week focused on keeping your heart and brain happy and healthy. There was a great brain health event where residents were able to learn more about the Memory Fitness class offered in the fall along with the Memory Cafe class, updates on the Memory Care unit and the Intermissions Program. If you happened to miss this event make sure you stop by the Resident Life Suite to pick up some pamphlets filled with information and who to contact for each area.
Make sure you tune into Channel 973 over the next two weeks to see these programs. Check out the TV Guides located at each community front desk to see when the shows air. They will also be available after they air the following day at oakcresttv.com.
