Sarah Achenbach and Bill Mcallen are no strangers to the Oak Crest community. This dynamic duo presented their lecture last year on their book, The Spirit of Place: Baltimore’s Favorite Spaces. If you have not picked up this book I highly recommend it. I have lived in Baltimore my entire life and there were at least 5-7 places I have never visited, or even heard of!
Personal Side note: If you HAVE read this book, I would also recommend picking up Humans of New York: Stories by Brandon Stanton. The author captures people on the streets of New York City in amazing photographs, along with a quick caption or paragraph of this person telling their unique story…truly amazing and inspirational.
This past Wednesday, Oak Crest was graced with the presence of Bill and Sarah once again for a very entertaining lecture. What made this so entertaining you might ask? Well, before putting together this presentation, neither Sarah nor Bill knew a thing about the monuments in Baltimore. They did as much research as they could before coming to present to the residents, and I have to say, they did an amazing job.
They talked about the history of the monuments from Mt. Vernon, to Mt. Washington, to the Inner Harbor, and everywhere in between. The pictures Bill photographed really helped add to their storytelling and got everyone very excited for the upcoming trip in May.
I think my favorite part about the lecture was when Bill was talking about the new 9/11 Memorial that was built right outside the World Trade Center in the Inner Harbor. I run past this monument at least three times a week and have never stopped to realize how powerful it was. The way this monument was constructed was almost as powerful as the monument itself.
You can hear this story along with many others when the show airs on Tuesday, April 18th at 10AM. You can watch rebroadcasts at 2PM, 7PM, 9PM, and 12 midnight. The episode will also be available the following day online at oakcresttv.com.
